Summary

Nature and colors again? Why not! You may be surprised, how often the same shapes and patterns are repeated in the nature。 What is shaped like heart or star around us? Which animal, mineral or plant is pointed and which of them wears wavy shapes? The ground, underground, even the deep dark seas are teeming with waves, dots, stripes, playful spots, curly spirals, or complicated patterns。 Even the tiniest ones have a place in nature and a reason to be there。 Camouflage patterns help animals blend in with their surroundings, while the more distinct ones serve them during courtship or when spooking an intruder。 Discover marvellous shapes and patterns you can find around!

This pretty, oversized book categorizes the common shapes and patterns found in the designs of flora, fauna, shells and rocks。 Each page spread offers a short, simple overview of the function of the pattern, and surrounds the text with dozens of small images for examples。 Terms for the shapes are shown at the bottom of the spread。 For “Leaves,” for example, a row of shapes shows the many styles of leaves, such as lance-shaped, ovate, whorled, palmate, bipinnate。 These are great Scrabble words! The art appears to be watercolor, and the artist uses a muted color palette。I think the book is of most use to young artists looking to understand the shapes in nature in order to create natural looking images。 The text offers little in the way of information。 In the section on flowers, the text explains that insects go about “digging their noses into fragrant cups,” which sounds poetic。 However, insects do not have noses, but use antennae and other parts of their bodies to detect scents。 Also, the art is serviceable for showing shapes, but colors are muted and textures are not detectable。 。。。more
